6 Actions You Can Take Every Day to Build Your Self-Confidence

Even the greatest leaders lack self-confidence at certain times. Self-confidence is not a static quality; rather, it’s a mindset that takes effort to maintain when the going gets rough. It must be learned, practiced and mastered just like any other skill. But once you master it, you will be changed for the better.
Here are six effective ways to promote your own self-confidence.

1. Act the part.

Your body language can instantly demonstrate self-assuredness, or it can scream insecurity. Present yourself in a way that says you are ready to master or take command of any situation. If you look confident and act the part you aspire to reach, you’ll not only feel in control, people will have much more confidence in you as well.
Hold your head high, sit up straight, gently bring your shoulders back to align your spine and look directly at the other person when interacting. Avoid a limp handshake and maintain good eye contact while someone is speaking to you.

2. Dress the part.

When you look better, you feel better. If you choose clothing and accessories that fit you well, suit your industry and lifestyle, and make you feel good, this will automatically increase your self-esteem. Look like the part you want to play, or in other words, suit up for success. Don’t be afraid to let your personality shine in your accessories. Bold jewelry or a colorful tie can be a focal point and a good conversation starter.

3. Speak assertively.

The next time you listen to your favorite speaker, be mindful of the way he or she delivers a speech. A great speaker speaks confidently, in a steady, rhythmic tone. Instead of the “ums” and “ahs” that interrupt flow, they use pauses to emphasize ideas.
Adopt an assertive, but not aggressive, way of speaking that indicates your self-confidence. You will feel your self-esteem begin to rise. To be taken seriously, avoid high-pitched, nervous chatter or twittering giggles in your speech. People will listen to you more attentively when they see the leader radiate from within you.

4. Think and act positively.

Positive energy leads to positive outcomes, so set your mind to the can-do side of any situation, avoiding the negative self-talk that can make you feel less confident. Smile, laugh and surround yourself with happy, positive people. You’ll feel better and the people with whom you work will enjoy your company.
Keep a gratitude journal to remind yourself of the high points of your day and your accomplishments. You will develop more peace and confidence when you are in a grateful state of mind.

5. Take action.

There’s more to being confident than just how you look. You must act the part. Walk up to a stranger at a networking event, or accept a project you’d normally reject. Practice being self-confident and soon it will become second nature.
Inaction breeds doubt and fear, while action breeds confidence and courage. As an exercise, jot down your strengths and weaknesses. Most people will tell you to work on your weaknesses, but use what you've got and capitalize on your strengths instead. Once you put more energy into your positive traits, your confidence will start to shine through.

6. Be prepared.

Remember the five P’s: Prior planning prevents poor performance. The more prepared you are, the more confident you’ll feel about your expertise and competency. Preparation will help you avoid getting tripped up by life’s unexpected glitches.
Learn everything you can about your industry, your subject matter, your goals and what drives you towards success. Before you start a task, first imagine how you want to feel once you’ve completed it. Don’t try to accomplish too much at once. Break complex tasks up into small, bite-size, manageable pieces.
As U.S. Army General Creighton Williams Abrams Jr. once said, “When eating an elephant take one bite at a time.” If you have patience and perseverance, you are only steps away from a more confident you.

11 Ways to Earn Respect at Work

We seek respect in our professional lives. Gaining the respect of others in the workplace is something many people want, but often have misguided ideas on how to achieve this goal.
The following tips will provide valuable insight into the process of gaining and keeping respect in the workplace.

1. Display self-confidence.

Show co-workers your passion for company goals and encourage others to do the same. Maintain your individual identity by not allowing the job to consume you. Your employer must realize that you choose to work for them. Do not let the fear of losing your job hinder your performance.
Have a backup plan in place if you are ever laid off. Always have options. This will give you the confidence and flexibility to be a visionary. Maintain a level of practically and adjust goals as needed.
2. Strive to complete each task and assignment on time.
This will demonstrate to both your supervisors and subordinates that you are a responsible person who keeps their word. This also helps others trust you and shows your have a high level of accountability. If you are given a deadline that is unreasonable, tactfully find a way to convey this information to the individual who set the deadline.

3. Show humility.

Be willing to admit your flaws, but do not focus on them. You should have some self-depreciation, but it should be paired with self-confidence. People generally will not respect a leader who appears insecure and continuously mentions their shortcomings.
Show your human side but maintain a sense of bravado and self-assurance.

4. Have patience with others.

Realize that co-workers each have their individual levels of learning and adapt to new tasks and job assignments accordingly. Praise others as they master each step of their new assignments. Having patience with others will demonstrate you have confidence in co-workers and believe they can expand their knowledge and skills. People are most likely to respect those who treat well and will not fear approaching them with problems or questions.

5. Respect co-workers even if you don't like them.

Despite not always seeing eye-eye with co-workers, you still must show professional respect to everyone you encounter during the course of the workday. Things change rapidly in the corporate world. Someone who is your subordinate may someday become your supervisor. Or a co-worker may join another company and become one of your future clients.

6. Don't repeat workplace gossip.

While it may be tempting to listen and repeat the latest office gossip, doing so will give the impression that you are not to be trusted with confidential information. It also gives the impression that you enjoy discussing the misfortunes of others. That is not a good way to earn respect.

7. Be inclusive.

Tell employees about changes in the organization and what impact it may have on all involved. Encourage employees to ask questions and stay informed about what is happening within the company. One simple way to accomplish is to publish an office newsletter.

8. Workers enjoy being praised.

This enhances their confidence in their skills. It may encourage them to work harder and learn new tasks and skills. If you must give criticism, combine it with praise for what the employee does well. If something does go wrong, do not publicly blame anyone else. If addressing a group, explain the problem and what steps are being taken to prevent future occurrences.

9. Share knowledge with co-workers.

This action demonstrates that you have confidence in their abilities to handle new situations and that you respect them enough to share this important information. As you seek knowledge, you must also learn the value of communal learning.
This will help you form a team mentality in the workplace and include others in your success. Respected people are seldom loners on the road to success. They include others along their journey and make it known that everyone has a role in the success of the company.

10. Be neat and organized.

An active workplace is indicative of a hard-working individual but a disorganized workplace leaves the impression that you have no regard for the image of the company. Your clothing should also reflect the idea that you value your professional image. Dress each day as if you are going to ask for a raise.

11. Always be professional, even at office parties.

The final word of advice to those who seek respect in the workplace is not to get drunk at company social functions. Although an event may be held off company premises, it is still a work-related event and it isn’t be professional to act rudely or say something inappropriate.
While your private life is your own business, you have to maintain your reputation at work by not over-indulging at social functions. If a co-worker gets intoxicated at an office party, be discrete and do not mention the incident in the following days.

4 Tips for Creating a Virtual Presence

It’s likely that you’ll create profiles on a variety of platforms, so it’s important to do some preparation work before creatingthem. The aim is to present a consistent persona across all platforms to ensure the perception people have of you is credible.

Create 3 Biographies. You’ll need long, short and very brief versions of your biography. Use the longer versions for your LinkedIn profile and your blog’s About page. Use shorter versions on Google profiles and other membership community sites. Twitter’s bio limits you to 160 characters. Do not write these in resume style; write them more personally as if you are speaking to someone. Allow your personality to shine through. Start with the longer version and then extract key points to create the short and briefversions. Creating bios before you start will help you present a consistent presence across all of your online profiles.
“Google” Yourself. Type your name into Google, Yahoo, Bing and other search engines to see what, if any, information is available about you online. Set up a Google Alert with your name in quotes to make sure you keep abreast of where you’re referenced in thefuture. This is helpful for thanking people who mention you, adding links to your blog or, worst case, addressing anything controversial that may arise.

Determine Your Goals. How you go about creating a virtual presence will depend upon your goals. What will you use your online presence to achieve? Do you want to become known as an expert in a specific area? Are you interested in building a network oflike-minded professionals? Do you want to learn more about your industry or how to advance your career? Based on your goals, do some research to learn where that information is being discussed or the people you’d like to know participate. Make a list ofplatforms to use given what you’ve learned. For business professionals, I recommend LinkedIn, Twitter and a community site such as Focus.com as well as a blog.

Choose an Avatar. An avatar is the picture you’ll use as an identifier for your virtual presence. Because of the normally thumbnail size, a close-in headshot works best. Until you’ve developed a solid presence, I suggest you use the same avatar across all youronline profiles. This helps people recognize you’re the same person they interacted with via another online channel. With this preparatory work complete, you’re now ready to create your profiles and begin participating online. Remember to listen first, share helpful and relevant insights and promote others more than promoting yourself, and you’ll be off to a great start.

Get Ready for Your Digital Close-up (Personal Branding)

Get Ready for Your Digital Close-up
Crosby Noricks

Establishing your personal brand online and carving out a niche for yourself through social media may not be quite as dire asthat early exodus to gold country, but it’s important to take a step back and think strategically about your goals, approach and how to effectively express your individuality and unique talents online.

It’s said that we make up our minds about how we feel about someone in seven seconds, and it’s arguably less in the chaotic wonderland of the Internet. Your profile image, along with the colors you use, voice and tone are your first impression online and as such, should be treated with care. Consider the following as it relates to your blog, Facebook page or Twitter account.
A picture’s worth…more than a thousand testimonials

It goes without saying that potential employers will do a search about you, and smart ones will do an image search, so keep anything you wouldn’t be thrilled to have your granddaughter find 40 years from now off the Internet! Too late? Remove everything you can and add captions and alt tags to all the images you can and over time, watch as those start showing up first.
Show your face

People want to see you, not your pet duck, adorable baby or rockin’ company logo —especially on sites like Twitter where you are obviously a person talking to other people. Most of the time, give fans and followers the close up and save the full body shots, artistic shots of your eyes/feet, or vacation photos for your personal, private pages. (and lock those security settings down tight!)

Find your look
In a world of mostly static images and text, you want to stand out. Unless you are a stodgy old lawyer who never cracks a smile, put away your tired headshots, fold up your crisp white t-shirts and find an outfit that speaks to who you are. Play around with your expression, laugh, smirk, wink —find the look that looks like you and use that. If you can’t afford a professional, ask a creative friend or learn how to use your self-timer and fake it ’til you make it, baby!

In addition to the photos you use, think about what you want your personal brand to feel like. Is it fun and funky, calm and serene? If your personal brand was a store —what would the store feel like? What colors, scents, fabrics and textures would there be? Are you grapefruit and glitter or tulips and tulle?
Keep it together
As legions of fans follow you across the Internet, give them a cohesive, branded experience. Use the same or similar photos, design elements and tone. Let anyone who stumbles upon your page know instantly that it’s you and not an imitation!

Your First Impression ( Personal Branding)

They say that the first impression is made within 60 seconds of meeting. Besides a few words, most of what comprises this first impression is unspoken —your actions and appearance are subliminally telling someone the story of who you are. What you are wearing on an interview or your first day of work can significantly impact what kind of first impression you make. What do you want your clothes to say about you?

Your First Impression

Christine Alvarez

The Interview

In an interview, you have only a short amount of time to state why you are right for the job, so let your appearance help paint the picture. Whether male or female, it is appropriate to wear a suit for almost any job interview, as you will look professional, polished and sophisticated. It's important to remember that several people may be applying for the same job as you, and you need to standout not only on paper but in person as well. Many men swear by the "power tie," and I agree that a strong pop of color can add adistinctive and memorable touch to a plain suit. A red tie or a crisp blue shirt can make a world of difference in a room full of black suits. Don't forget that strong handshake!
The Job

You nailed the interview and got the job, now what? Casual, business casual, formal? "Dress for success" is a relative term. Every office has its own dress code and rules. A good rule of thumb is to always dress for the job you want, not the job you have. In a casual office where everyone wears jeans, consider wearing khakis, or dress up your nicest jeans with a tailored shirt and leather loafers or heels. You will stand out among your T-shirt–clad peers. Even in a casual dress office, flip flops, jeans with holes, logo shirts and anything you would wear to a club should always be avoided.

In a business casual environment, tailored pants should be a staple in your wardrobe. Black is a common color choice, but khaki, navy blue, pinstripes and grey are all appropriate as well. Women can also wear skirts and dresses provided they are not too short. Pairing pants/skirts with tailored shirts, blouses or sweaters are all suitable options, and you can express your individuality by experimenting with different colors and prints.

Business formal dress codes are typically characterized by requiring a suit to be worn. This means that your pants or skirts need a matching jacket. Suits come in all sorts of colors and styles, including skirt suits and dress suits for women. Consider a business formal dress code to be like going to an interview where you need to look polished and professional yet can usually differentiate yourself through your choice of shirts, ties and appropriate accessories.

The RulesDressing for success at work can come easily with just a little thought. If anything, remember these basic rules:

1.If you have to think twice about your clothing choice, it is probably not appropriate.

2.Don't wear anything too low, too short or too low cut. Also, undergarments should NEVER be visible.

3.Ill-fitting clothes do not look professional or polished. To look your best, have your suit tailored.

4.Experiment with color. Being a professional does not mean sacrificing individuality.

5.Dress for the job you want!

What to do if your name is not unique for personal Branding

One of the challenges in online personal branding , is that some people share their name with others. Sometimes for the good, others for the bad. A great story about Brooke Allen who is sharing name, city and profession with another Brooke Allen
Many people share their name with someone else. If your real you has the best online reputation, do not change a thing, and keep building your name. If you do find someone else using your name to shame, you can try the following things:
1. Boost your reputation, say you have used your name as Joseph Rapsody, but another Joseph Rapsody came along and posting rubbish in forums, really work on your personal brand and get your name to fame on the internet.
2. Enhance your name, if your name is Joe Smith, you stand a good chance that there is not just one other Joe Smith to beat, there will be many. By using an initial in the middle, or always using your title in your name you will differ your name from the crowd of Joe Smiths. While there are 193.000 listings in Google for Joe Smith, none exists for Dr. Joe G. Smith.
3. Choose a new name that stands out, when I started my ways on the internet, I really did not like my name as it was, long and difficult for any non-Dutch speaker to repeat. A great moment was it that I married and could choose for my husband’s name, which I did, and I changed my last name from van der Graaf to Hensel. Other people choose for an entirely non-existing name that reflects what they do or make it easy to remember. Trade your own last name in for a last name that reflects your ambitions, i.e. Marieke Gates – Bill Gates or Marieke Branson – Richard Branson.
Change your first name into a name that is powerful or international can help to enhance your personal brand as well. What is it that you want your personal brand to be.
It is not easy to change your name. You will only see the full effect, if people use your name like that and you feel confident if you feel you are that name

Posted using ShareThis

Imation Brings Dead Brands Back to Life - BusinessWeek

Imation Brings Dead Brands Back to Life - BusinessWeek: "Imation Brings Dead Brands Back to Life"

You might think a brand is dead when stores stop selling it. Jeff Meredith knows better. The vice-president for global marketing and product development at Imation (IMN), the world's largest seller of recordable compact discs, has spent the last couple of years reincarnating Memorex as a line of consumer electronics. Now he's bringing back another relic from the predigital age, TDK, as a high-end line of stereo gear. After that, Meredith wants to rejuvenate at least one other brand: Imation itself. (Remember Imation floppy disks? Remember floppy disks?)

Meredith's work may be make or break for his employer. The 1996 spinoff from 3M (MMM) has lost money for three years running. Last year's revenue of $1.65 billion was down 20% from the company's peak in 2007 as consumers skip past data-storage media like compact discs and put their data on flash memory, where Imation is only a minor player, or on the Net instead. Charles Murphy, an analyst with Sidoti & Co., says Imation has two years to turn itself around before it could be forced to start burning through its $163 million cash cushion. "It's paramount that they find some way to grow," he says.

Obama vs. Clinton: Leadership Styles

Obama vs. Clinton: Leadership Styles: "Viewpoint February 8, 2008, 6:08PM EST text size: TTObama vs. Clinton: Leadership Styles"

His approach of visionary leadership is appealing but risky. Her health-care reform managerialism already has been proven ineffective

The virtual dead heat in the Super Tuesday Democratic primary is being attributed by the punditocracy to the absence of any significant policy differences separating candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. The two nonetheless have drawn clear distinctions between the ways in which they each propose to govern the nation, and those differences sound a lot like a rehashing of past debates about opposing styles of corporate leadership.

Senator Clinton (D-N.Y.) argues that the role of the President is not only to provide visionary leadership outward from the Oval Office to the nation and the world but also to control and direct the federal bureaucracy downward to ensure that policies are carried out faithfully and effectively.

In sharp contrast, Senator Obama (D-Ill.) declares he will do the chief executive's job by focusing completely on providing leadership vision, judgment, and inspiration. As for controlling the agencies that would report to him, he says he will delegate that responsibility. He pledges to stay above the managerial fray and, instead, hold agency heads fully accountable for the performance of the bureaucracies in their charge.

On one level, these visions seem to reflect a Carteresque tendency to micromanage (Clinton) and a Reaganesque organizational nonchalance (Obama). But each candidate is actually putting forth a well-reasoned philosophy of leadership, and their distinct approaches have implications for their respective abilities to deliver on the changes the majority of the nation seems to desire. From the vantage point of a business school professor, what is particularly striking is that the two candidates clearly articulate competing theories of leadership that have been the focus of much scholarly research over the last several decades; what I'll refer to as the "managerial" and "transformational" approaches.

Textbook Exercise
As Clinton reminds us, she has actual experience in the practice of the former. As head of the health-care reform initiative during her husband's first Administration, she conducted a near-textbook exercise in managerialism. She closeted for months in the White House with an impressive team of technocrats who thoroughly reviewed all the relevant data about the U.S. health-care system, analyzing various and opposing views about what should be done to improve its performance, and bringing forth a highly detailed national health-care plan. In assembling that complex plan, the technocrats included ideas from numerous, conflicting ideological and professional camps, assuming what they each would need to have in the plan in order to support it.

But instead of building a consensus for change, this exercise actually created deep dissatisfaction among all the relevant constituencies needed to enact the proposed legislation. By deciding what these players required without involving them in the process, the technocrats built resistance to the very changes they proposed. The result: gridlock and, subsequently, a dozen years of a worsening health-care crisis.

It is noteworthy that while claiming the mantle of experience, Clinton has not spelled out what lessons she learned from this lost opportunity. Based on the detailed policy positions the wonks on her campaign staff have put forward on every conceivable national issue, it would appear that she is still of the managerialist persuasion.

That's not surprising. After all, managerialism was, until relatively recently, the dominant school of thought in the corporate world as well. Influenced heavily by the quantitative techniques developed by Robert McNamara's Whiz Kids at the Pentagon and Ford Motor (F), it was promulgated at the nation's leading B-schools and, in the 1970s and '80s, led not only to the wide-scale practice of management science in business organizations but also to the creation of large, centralized planning staffs and the top-down leadership methods known collectively as "change management."

Eight Big Ideas for Small Business

Tricks to Keep Growing

Tricks to Keep Growing
It is a good thing that Roger Dreyer has a passion for magic. Over the past 18 months, the 48-year-old tried nearly every trick in the book to find the expansion capital he needed to grow his business, Fantasma Toys Inc. He turned to traditional bank lenders for working capital, with no luck. Even though he had a backlog of orders from the likes of Costco and Toys "R" Us for his firm's specialty magic sets, the deep recession made credit disappear. So like the chief operating wizard he is, he found an innovative approach to his dilemma.

Room to Read - Bangladesh - Room to Read

Room to Read - Bangladesh - Room to Read

Room to Read's Role
Room to Read successfully registered as an NGO in Bangladesh in July 2008 and hired a Country Director shortly thereafter. Room to Read Bangladesh is currently focused on building a local team to create an organizational and programmatic strategy in the country. Consistent with Room to Read's work in other countries, it is likely that programs will be in rural areas,(9) where the need is generally higher than in urban areas; additionally this is sensible in Bangladesh where 76% of the population lives in rural areas. The team will also explore potential opportunities for partnership with local and national government, non-profit organizations, and communities to establish libraries and girls scholarships.

Programs & Results
In its first year of operations, Room to Read Bangladesh plans to establish 75 libraries and support 200 girls in the Girls' Education Program. In addition to this, the country office will celebrate many operational results, some of these include hiring at least four staff members (Accounts & Finance Manager, Reading Room Program Officer, Girls' Education Program Office, and an Office Associate), establishing an office in Dhaka, and localizing Room to Read policies and procedures.

Brand community

A brand community is a community formed on the basis of attachment to a product or marque. Recent developments in marketing and in research in consumer behavior result in stressing the connection between brand, individual identity and culture. Among the concepts developed to explain the behavior of consumers, the concept of a brand community focuses on the connections between consumers. A brand community can be defined as an enduring self-selected group of actors sharing a system of values, standards and representations (a culture) and recognizing bonds of membership with each other and with the whole.

Building A Brand Community

Even though it may seem a simple marketing concept, building brand communities that resonate with loyal customers is indeed a Herculean task. There are four defining characteristics that allow companies to actively involve customers in creating communities around their brands. Each are essential in building brand communities.
1. Create a strong brand story/myth: Brands in today’s world are not mere inanimate ‘things’ but thriving entities with identities and personalities that allow customers to express themselves through its consumption. As such, to attract customers to it and encourage them to actively participate in varied branding activities, brands must have a strong story or myth that customers can easily identify and relate to. A story/myth not only provides authenticity to the brand but also allows customers to express their sense of self through the consumption of the brand.
2. Create a need for collaboration among consumers: For a community to be actively adopted, customers must feel a need to connect with each other in the context of the brand’s consumption. A need to connect with other brand users can arise for a number of reasons such as:
1. Sharing information – Members of many video game communities, technical products communities become members in the first instance because such communities allow members to share information with others and learn many technical details easily.
2. Validation – Members of the Nike or Louis Vuitton brand community seek validation from fellow members about their choice of the brand, its usage situations and its superiority over other brands in the market

3. To express one’s personality – Members of the Apple computer brand community feel a strong sense of expressing their unique personality by embracing Apple and rejecting the market leader Microsoft.
4. Identify with a specific segment – Members of the Samsung brand community are part of the community because of their need to be identified as part of the global ‘cool’ segment that is in tune with the latest in technology and fashion. Therefore companies should decide the main reason for which they want to build communities around their brands is in line with the segments that it wants to target.
3. Create identifiable brand elements: As with any community, brand communities must be able to offer its members unique identifiable community elements in terms of terminologies, icons, symbols and spokespersons. Such community elements will not only help the community distinguish itself from others but also offers the members tangible tools to identify themselves with the community. These community elements should be in line with the brand’s underlying identity.
4. Create a unique culture: One of the fundamental reasons for the growing popularity of brand communities is that they offer companies real time feedback about the brand. Further, brand communities allow companies to co-create value with customers on a continuous basis. As such, companies must create a culture that allows customers to interact with the brand, other users and the company simultaneously. Such an environment allows customers to experience the brand in a memorable manner as they are a part of the value creation process.

These four steps will assist a company in framing a robust structure to build a brand community. As with any business venture, the success of a brand community depends on how proactively the company engages customers on a continuous basis.

When managed properly, brand communities are proving to be an effective tool in tackling the ever-growing competition. Brand communities not only allow companies to collaborate with customers in all phases of value creation – product design, pricing, places of availability, and phases of promotion – but also provide companies an effective platform on which to engage customers and create loyalty towards the brand. The most successful will be those communities that are built on strong fundamentals centered around the brand identity and support the brand strategy.

Brand architecture

Brand architecture is the structure of brands within an organizational entity. It is the way in which the brands within a company’s portfolio are related to, and differentiated from, one another. The architecture should define the different leagues of branding within the organization; how the corporate brand and sub-brands relate to and support each other; and how the sub-brands reflect or reinforce the core purpose of the corporate brand to which they belong. According to Rajagopal Brand architecture may be defined as an integrated process of brand building through establishing brand relationships among branding options in the competitive environment. The brand architecture of an organisation at any time is, in large measure, a legacy of past management decisions as well as the competitive realities it faces in the marketplace[1].
Types of brand architecture

There are three key levels of branding:• Corporate brand, umbrella brand, and family brand - Examples include Virgin Group and Heinz. These are consumer-facing brands used across all the firm's activities, and this name is how they are known to all their stakeholders – consumers, employees, shareholders, partners, suppliers and other parties. These brands may also be used in conjunction with product descriptions or sub-brands: for example Heinz Cream of Tomato Soup, or Virgin Trains.

Endorsed brands, and sub-brands - For example, Nestle KitKat, Cadbury Dairy Milk, Sony PlayStation or Polo by Ralph Lauren. These brands include a parent brand - which may be a corporate brand, an umbrella brand, or a family brand - as an endorsement to a sub-brand or an individual product brand. The endorsement should add credibility to the endorsed sub-brand in the eyes of consumers.

Individual product brand - For example, Procter & Gamble’s Pampers or Unilever's Dove. The individual brands are presented to consumers, and the parent company name is given little or no prominence. Other stakeholders, like shareholders or partners, will know the producer by its company name.

Attitude branding and Iconic brands

Attitude branding is the choice to represent a larger feeling, which is not necessarily connected with the product or consumption of the product at all. Marketing labeled as attitude branding include that of Nike, Starbucks, The Body Shop, Safeway, and Apple Inc.. In the 2000 book No Logo,[9] Naomi Klein describes attitude branding as a "fetish strategy".

"A great brand raises the bar -- it adds a greater sense of purpose to the experience, whether it's the challenge to do your best in sports and fitness, or the affirmation that the cup of coffee you're drinking really matters." - Howard Schultz (president, CEO, and chairman of Starbucks)

Iconic brands are defined as having aspects that contribute to consumer's self-expression and personal identity. Brands whose value to consumers comes primarily from having identity value comes are said to be "identity brands". Some of these brands have such a strong identity that they become more or less "cultural icons" which makes them iconic brands. Examples of iconic brands are: Apple Inc., Nike and Harley Davidson. Many iconic brands include almost ritual-like behaviour when buying and consuming the products.

There are four key elements to creating iconic brands (Holt 2004):
1."Necessary conditions" - The performance of the product must at least be ok preferably with a reputation of having good quality.
2."Myth-making" - A meaningful story-telling fabricated by cultural "insiders". These must be seen as legitimate and respected by consumers for stories to be accepted.
3."Cultural contradictions" - Some kind of mismatch between prevailing ideology and emergent undercurrents in society. In other words a difference with the way consumers are and how they some times wish they were.
4."The cultural brand management process" - Actively engaging in the myth-making processmaking sure the brand maintains its position as an icon.

Types of Brand Names

Brand names come in many styles.[2] A few include: Acronym: A name made of initials such as UPS or IBM

Descriptive:Names that describe a product benefit or function like Whole Foods or Airbus
Alliteration and Rhyme: Names that are fun to stay and stick in your mind like Reeses Pieces or Dunkin Donuts
Evocative: Names that evoke a relevant vivid image like Amazon or Crest
Neologisms: Completely made up words like Wii or Kodak
Foreign Word: Adoption of a word from another language like Volvo or Samsung
Founders Names: Using the names of real people like Hewlett-Packard or Disney
Geography: Many brands are named for regions and landmarks like Cisco and Fuji Film
Personification: Many brands take their names from myth like Nike or from the minds of ad execs like Betty Crocker
The act of associating a product or service with a brand has become part of pop culture. Most products have some kind of brand identity, from common table salt to designer jeans. A brandnomer is a brand name that has colloquially become a generic term for a product or service, such as Band-Aid or Kleenex, which are often used to describe any kind of adhesive bandage or any kind of facial tissue respectively.

Developing as a presenter

Trust yourself
If you do not think you are up to a particular presentation either get help (do training courses and rehearsals), or get someone else to do it (there's no shame in recognising your limits). However, most people have better presentation skills that they think they do. Recognise what you have. If you doubt your ability to think on your feet, for example, then defer questions till after the presentation. Similarly, do not use a joke as an ice breaker if you are not good at telling them.
Success is the best presentation.Don't over reach yourself. Several short presentations that you feel went well will do you far more good than one big one that makes you sick with nerves and leaves you feeling inadequate.
Feedback
Encourage those around you to tell you the things you did well. Very few of us make progress by being told what was wrong with our presentation. When we're up in front of an audience we all have very fragile egos.
